Our clients do it. My colleagues do it. I do it too. But can we trust the result?
Checking your own website’s rank every now and then can be either a immensely satisfying or highly demoralising experience. More often than not, it swings toward the positive. That’s because YOU ROCK!
“Wowzies! I rank 5th today, and last week it was just 17th. I ROCK!”
Ever had this happen to you and then proudly trot off to tell your friends, your Facebook pals and sometimes even some of your critics about how well you’re doing now?
“I rank number 5 in Google! Nah-nah-na-na-nah!” Only to have one of those friends, vaguely friendly Facebook connections or harsh critics search the same search you said you got 5th for only to end up telling you that none of them can find you on page 1 in Google.
“Oh weird, must be a bit of flux” you say. “Try again later – you’ll see! I ROCK!”
So later they try again… and….. nope. Nowhere. Page 2? Nope. Page 3? Nope. “Oh God, Google has gone mad! I was there this morning!”
So you try on a work colleague’s computer and sure enough, there you are on page 15 in 147th place.
Utterly deflated. How could this possible be happening? Well…. let me tell you:
Ever search your own website and click on yourself? Try it a few times? Well, Google is watching your behaviour. They are gathering little sneaky bits of intel on you all the time. They have figured out that whenever you search “bla-bla-bla” you are looking for a particular website, because they noticed that you kept wading through lots of pages until you found exactly this one particular site.
You did it more than once.
You did it after your morning shower. Yep, it’s still there.
You did it in the bus on your laptop.
You did it again, just to check, when you got home from the office.
One more time after hot choccie and a biscuit before bed.
Next day at breakfast again. A little obsessed are we?
Anyway: Google has decided that you obviously LOVE this website and want to get faster and easier access to it so they bumped onto page one. Aren’t they helpful? Just for you.
JUST FOR YOU.
Sad face 🙁
